5.1.1 Classification of Data Types

Data types are categorized along various dimensions. As mentioned above, the specification distinguishes between primitive and derived data types and defines 19 primitive types2 and 25 derived types (in total, 44 built-in types) that are available for use in all schemas. The primitive and derived built-in data types are listed in Fig. 5.1. The type string corresponds to character data found in most XML ­documents. The second line of primitive data types shows those with numeric ­values, and the third line lists the time-related data types. The two types on the fourth line are for binary data, and the last line lists the primitive types for URIs, qualified names, notations, and Boolean values. The first (extended) line of the derived built-in types shows numeric data types derived directly or indirectly from the primitive data type decimal. The data types of the remaining lines are derived directly or indirectly from the primitive data type string; those on the middle line are defined by restriction and those on the last line by forming lists.
